TheSearchMan is a free tool which searches your hard drives for files.
It is:
1. Blazing fast. (Searches 50 GB drive in 1 second!)
2. Small.
3. Multi-threaded. (Your computer never hangs!)
4. Portable(which means No Installations Required!)
5. Very simple to operate.
6. Small interface. (Doesn't block your screen)
7. Auto-updation of index with virtually no CPU usage.
8. Allows to Search with-in your searches in real-time.
9. Supports Wildcards (* and ?)
10. Small memory footprint ( Leaves RAM others softwares)
11. Supports index and real-time searching both.

"Folder Name":
is the place to enter the location where you want to search your files. It may be a folder or a drive
If you want to search in a drive just enter its name(eg c).
If you want to search all drives enter "all" in the folder box.
If its a folder the you could either
use the "Browse for Folder" window or enter the text yourself but I recommend the former.

"File Name":
is the place where you enter the file(s) to be search.
When entering the filename it is strongly recommeded to use
wild cards. You must almost always use them unless you know the
filename correctly.

TheSearchMan accepts windows wildcards (? for 1 character and * for multiple character)
and you are encouraged to almost always use them for better results.
The 'Search with-in Search' will show searches within searches.
To get accurate results please enter the file name efficiently.

    No TheSearchMan can't do that.
    For that i think you'd need Google Desktop but I've heard it slows down your computer.

  12. This is very nice and simple. However, would it be possible to remember the last folder searched? I am basically searching always the same main folder and it's pretty annoying to navigate to it each time.

  19. Crashes on index all drives in XP Pro SP3 also, but as near as I can tell, any files already indexed remain in the index, so it is not a complete waste of time.

  22. i use windows xp and have just installed the lastest java platform SE binary 6.0.240.7 but when i start TheSearchMan it fails and says that it can't find the runtime to run searchman. what might be the problem? thanks a lot for helping.

  23. TheSearchMan is NOT java based.
    you need to have .net 3.5 framework to run it.

    you can download it for free from Microsoft.

  25. in folder name, type: all
    and filename according to your needs...
    TSM will now perform real time hard disk search.

    if you have indexed previously, then it will automatically be searched over all the contents.

  26. Hi,
    I'm looking for a good files clones searching manager... (with hash comparaison, file name comparaison, size, date...)
    Do you know one?
    (not clone remover 2.0 who cannot handled big numbers of files or folders and has a GUI who crash on XP pro SP3)
    I'm wondering if with basic changes you cannot add some fonctionalities of clone searching and 'removing' (under control)

  27. Today I downloaded the current version of TSM (1.6), extracted the contents of the RAR to a local folder, and tried to launch it in 32-bit Vista with SP2. Within 2 seconds, as it begins to launch, it produces the standard Vista error dialog: "TheSearchMan has stopped working. A problem caused ..." The magnifying glass remains visible in the Notification Area, but disappears as soon as the cursor is positioned over it.

    The same scenario happens when I configure the file properties to start as Administrator, or when I configure it to run as Administrator in Compatibility Mode for XP SP2.

    Please advise if there is any way to work around this.

  28. I thought this software was perfect as it can also search network drives but it keeps crashing!

    I do not know the exact cause but I hope you can find it and patch it. For instance a search on "c:\" will crash, search on "C:\users\administrator" will crash but a search on "C:\users\administrator\desktop" works fine.

    I thought it had to do with the number of files as a search in the "appdata" folder (>20,000+) will crash, but I did my own testing in a folder that I put more than that many files, and it didn't crash.

    Tried it in both Win 7 32-Bit & 64-Bit.

    if you can give me the crash reports, they will greatly help me resolving the error.

    can you please check if it indexes properly?
    click on "create new index" and see if it crashes?

Question: I am a DJ now using windows 7 64-bit what I need is a basic search menu/results just like windows XP has, where I can search my songs primarily by last modified & alphabetical order or name, I find windows XP perfect & fast for me for song file searches, but windows 7 file search is not as simple and intuitive as windows XP for my needs, I also preferred on XP the text and ability to change from view list by icons/details/list/thumbnails arrange icons by name/modified etc, on XP, will TheSearchMan work like my windows XP menu search or is there a way I can have my windows XP file search on windows 7? Please Help Me!

      I use foobar to manage my songs list, may be you could give it a try.
      Also as a bit of advice, if its possible, switch to XP. If XP suits you, use XP.

I would use XP exclusively, but I need windows 7 64-bit on the i7 4-core with 8-core hyper threading 32gb ram and dual hard drives, this processing power requires windows 7 not XP, need this setup on my laptop since I am now running a video software program that is cpu draining and a separate DJ music program at the same time on one laptop, with the DJ audio software output to the sound system and the video software output to the big screens..
      So I need a XP file search for my music to make things easier...
